How Are the Profit & Loss Figures Calculated?
As mentioned earlier, the Profit & Loss (P/L) French Ligue 1 stats are calculated as though you had backed each team to win every game with £10 stakes, using odds from bet365♚. The data is then added together cumulatively throughout the season to give the total profit or loss each team would generate.
🍨 ROI (Return On Investment) is calculated by dividing the total Profit/Loss by the number of matches played and then converted into a percentage.

French Ligue 1 Key Stats
Average Number of Goals Scored in Ligue 1 Match Stats
ꦬ Sitting in the 5th place of European leagues, the Ligue 1 has not been receiving as much exposure as the leagues preceding it. This has nothing to do with the number of goals scored per match, though. With the likes of teams such as Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco and Lyon, goals are not likely to be an issue.
Over the past 5 seasons the average goals per game have been consistently higher than 2.5,꧟ which goes to confirm that stalemate draws are hard to come by in France’s highest division.
Season | Matches Played | Goals Scored | Average Goals per Game |
---|---|---|---|
2020/2021 | 380 | 1049 | 2.76 |
2019/2020 | 279 | 704 | 2.52 |
2018/2019 | 380 | 972 | 2.56 |
2017/2018 | 380 | 1033 | 2.72 |
2016/2017 | 380 | 991 | 2.61 |
2015/2016 | 380 | 960 | 2.53 |
2014/2015 | 380 | 947 | 2.49 |
2013/2014 | 380 | 933 | 2.46 |
2012/2013 | 380 | 967 | 2.54 |
2011/2012 | 380 | 956 | 2.52 |
Ligue 1 Champions – Historical Home Win Percentage Stats
𒐪 Many teams favour playing at home because of the familiarity of the surroundings and the support of the local crowd, which has a great effect on morale. Due to these factors, the home win percentages for teams who end up winning the Ligue 1 are normally very high.
🔴 This was not the case with Lille in the 2020/21 season, however, as they barely managed to win half of the matches disputed at home. The highest recorded win percentages during the past decade have been achieved by Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, when they both won 17 of their 19 home matches.
Season | Champions | Home Win Percentage |
---|---|---|
2020/2021 | Lille | 52.6% |
2019/2020 | Paris Saint-Germain | 85.7% |
2018/2019 | Paris Saint-Germain | 89.5% |
2017/2018 | Paris Saint-Germain | 89.5% |
2016/2017 | Monaco | 89.5% |
2015/2016 | Paris Saint-Germain | 78.9% |
2014/2015 | Paris Saint-Germain | 78.9% |
2013/2014 | Paris Saint-Germain | 78.9% |
2012/2013 | Paris Saint-Germain | 68.4% |
2011/2012 | Montpellier | 84.2% |
Overall, the Home Win Percentage for the Ligue 1 in 2020/21 was 37%, which happens to be the lowest ratio since 2009.
ꦑ In the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season, matches were cancelled due to the pandemic breaking out in France, causing the league to be halted after 279 matches. No more games were played that season, and the league title was awarded to Paris Saint-Germain, who were leading the standings at the time.
The above helped to show that the home crowd really does have an effect on the matches being played in front of them.
Ligue 1 Champions – Historical Away Win Percentage Stats
When on the run, the win percentages are not expected to be as high as the home ones; however, we have seen some stunning away campaigns on a few instances.
In 2020/21 Lille managed to win more away matches than home matches, beating 14 teams away and only 10 at home. That meant that the French champions won 24 out of the 38 total matches that season. During that same season, Paris Saint-Germain won 2 more matches overall, but Lille managed to lose fewer matches and won the league by just 1 point on the final day.
♌ Paris Saint-Germain currently hold the highest away win percentage with a staggering 78.9% achieved in the 2015/16 season, when they won 15 of the 19 matches played on the run, losing only 1 in the process.
Season | Champions | Away Win Percentage |
---|---|---|
2020/2021 | Lille | 73.7% |
2019/2020 | Paris Saint-Germain | 76.9% |
2018/2019 | Paris Saint-Germain | 63.2% |
2017/2018 | Paris Saint-Germain | 63.2% |
2016/2017 | Monaco | 68.4% |
2015/2016 | Paris Saint-Germain | 78.9% |
2014/2015 | Paris Saint-Germain | 47.4% |
2013/2014 | Paris Saint-Germain | 63.2% |
2012/2013 | Paris Saint-Germain | 63.2% |
2011/2012 | Montpellier | 47.4% |
Similar to the notion mentioned in the Home Win Advantage stat, the Ligue 1 teams recorded the highest away win ratio in the past 15 years during the 2020/21 season, when teams were playing behind closed doors nearly all season, thus missing out on support from the spectators. The overall away wins ratio for that season was 38%, which was extremely highꦐ when compared to the 10-year average of 28.4%. In fact, that percentage has not gone over 30% once in the past decade.
Ligue 1 Champions – Historical Totals Draw Stats
During the 2020/21, Lille ended up with 11 draws in total, and ended up winning the league just the same. The same happened with Paris Saint-Germain in the 2014/15 season. Incidentally, both teams would end up winning the respective seasons with exactly 83 points.

ꦇ *Paris Saint-Germain only played 27 matches during the 2019/20 season, since the final part of the league was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Average Number of Points per Match for the Ligue 1 Winner Stats
The points per match stat is normally used an indicator of how good a performance the team in question is showing. With the maximum being a perfect 3 (i.e. all matches were won and hence resulted in 3 points), any score over 2.5 is truly an impressive feat.
The highest score in our list is from Paris Saint-Germain’s record-breaking campaign in the 2015/16 season, when they managed to win 96 points𒐪! During that season, Zlatan Ibrahimovic equalled the record of most consecutive matches, scoring a goal in 9 matches in a row.
The Parisians were actually on route to challenging that point record in the 2019/20 season, with 68 points after 27 matches. They even managed to score 4 goals in their final 4 matches, but surprisingly did not go on to win all of them,😼 as they won 4-2 vs Lyon, came from 3-0 down to lowly Amiens to salvage a point with a 4-4 draw, then won 4-3 to Bordeaux and 4-0 to Dijon in what would prove to be their final match of the season.
Season | Champions | Points Tally | Average Points per Match |
---|---|---|---|
2020/2021 | Lille | 83 | 2.18 |
2019/2020 | Paris Saint-Germain | 68 | 2.52 |
2018/2019 | Paris Saint-Germain | 91 | 2.39 |
2017/2018 | Paris Saint-Germain | 93 | 2.45 |
2016/2017 | Monaco | 95 | 2.50 |
2015/2016 | Paris Saint-Germain | 96 | 2.53 |
2014/2015 | Paris Saint-Germain | 83 | 2.18 |
2013/2014 | Paris Saint-Germain | 89 | 2.34 |
2012/2013 | Paris Saint-Germain | 83 | 2.18 |
2011/2012 | Montpellier | 82 | 2.16 |
Over the past 10 seasons, the average number of points to gain in order to end up in a top 3 position (and a place in Champions League qualification) was 72.7 points. That results in an average of 1.91 points per match. On the other hand, the average number of points to gain in order not to risk direct relegation, or play the relegation playoff, is 1.04 per match.
Most Wins in a Ligue 1 Season Stats

-
89 points – Paris Saint-Germain in 2013/14
Once again, the men in blue have dominated this stat too! What is impressive about these figures is the fact that during these particular seasons mentioned, Paris Saint-Germain was managed by 3 different managers🔥! These were Laurent Blanc in 2013/14 and 2015/16, Unai Emery in 2017/18, and Thomas Tuchel in 2018/19.
Needless to say, since the takeover by Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, ruler of Qatar, in 2011, the team has managed to get hold of some of the best managers and players around. Two noticeable purchases were that of Neymar for £198 million in August 2017 and Kylian Mbappé for £124 million in July 2018, both sitting 1st and 2nd in the list of most expensive transfers to date.

♉ In the above table we are omitting the 2019/20 season due to the fact that only 73% of the matches were played.
As you may see, all the above 5 instances happened at least 10 years ago💖. As the league becomes more competitive, it will take top teams more points to secure the French league title. In fact, according to our Ligue 1 statistics, the average amount of points achieved by the Ligue 1 winners over the past ten seasons was 88.3 points after a spell of 90+ points between 2015/16 and 2018/19.
In 2016/17, Paris Saint-Germain even managed to win 87 points but still finished in 2nd place that year behind Monaco, who had the likes of Radamel Falcao, Fabinho, Bernardo Silva, Thomas Lemar and none other than an 18-year-old Kylian Mbappé in their squad. On that occasion, Monaco even managed to get themselves to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals!
Over the past 10 seasons, Paris Saint-Germain have won the league 7 times, and have set an outstanding average of winning the league with a comfortable 14-point margin over second place. The record for highest points margin to win the league was set in 2015/16, when they won by a 31-point margin!
Highest Number of Points for Relegation Stats
♕ In France, the bottom two teams at the end of the Ligue 1 season are automatically relegated to the second division, while the team in 16th place faces the 3rd-placed team in the Ligue 2 in a relegation/promotion play-off over two legs. The standings on the final day showed that there were only 16 points between Paris Saint-Germain, who ended 4th and earned spot in Europa League qualification, and Monaco, who were relegated since the relegation playoff only became a thing in the 2016/17 season. That season also saw the highest amount of draws in a season – a staggering 130 draws!

Why Is It Important to Look at French Ligue 1 Stats?
Many punters use stats to try and identify trends in results – this can help predict the outcome of future matches. Some may try to pick up on some scoring trends or a period in which a particular French team is struggling to keep a clean sheet.
However, it is not only bettors that turn to the stats when planning their next steps. Backroom staff from the most of the prominent teams also study the statistics and numbers in order to help give the coach the tips needed to take the ‘right’ tactical decisions.💟 For example, this could end up in favouring attacks down the left flank rather than the right, if they find out the opposition is conceding double the number of goals from that side.
Having said that, there is no magic formula that can guarantee a result in football. As we all know, anything can happen during those 90 minutes, such as the time 2-1 with only 16% possession and 14 less shots. Another instance would be when Paris Saint-Germain had a 4-0 first-leg advantage against Barcelona, and then lost it all in a ౠ with Sergi Roberto’s goal in the final minute, cancelling all hope of the French winning on away goals.
